I’ve gone and edited the original list shown below. Strikethrough text means movies you SHOULDN’T see. Paranormal Activity was absolutely terrible. Boring and never scary. Which brings the next movie, I left Blair Witch Project on the list. It had better marketing and even though it was boring to most audiences, I still enjoy it for what it is. It reminded me of the original The Haunting movie. Props to the actual BWP filmmakers.
My reason for editing the original Tumblr post? Too much I would change. The original author also missed a lot of titles. Hacksaw Jenny has a good idea as well and notes the missing titles.
Please note this isn’t my ultimate horror list. I’m missing quite a few movies especially in the classic/cult list.
Legend:
movie title = not recommended by me
movie title = left it as is; agree with the original author
movie title = added to the list
Bold text can also mean added comment by me.
Changes:
- Moved Pet Semetary from the “Must See” list to “Not Good but I liked it” list
- Moved House of 1000 Corpses from the “Must See” list to “Not Good but I liked it” list. Although I strongly suggest The Devil’s Rejects, the follow-up to House of 1000 Corpses. I liked both movies equally but the sequel turned out better overall.
- Moved Grindhouse from the “Muse See” list to “Not Good but I liked it” list: Grindhouse was meant for those who enjoyed the old grindhouse-type movies or for those who never experienced them. Grindhouse doesn’t come close. Death Proof had potential but ended up like Tarantino’s other films, just grainy & horror revenge-like. Poor use of a great villian/stalker/killer. Planet Terror was fun though and well worth the watch. So was the fake trailers in-between the two films. Hilarious!
- Moved Shaun of the Dead from “Classic/Cult” list to “Not Quite Horror” list: Shaun maybe a hit but it’s not a classic. Classic/Cult is more reserved at the older flicks to me or I would be listing more modern flicks in this category. The movie is classified as a “rom-com-zom” movie as per the filmmakers.
- Moved Sixth Sense from “Classic/Cult” list to “Must See” list: See my reasons above for Shaun of the Dead.
- Strikethrough movies in the “Classic/Cult” list simply means they don’t belong there and/or disagree with them(i.e. avoid it!).
These aren’t really in any order at all because i can’t be bothered to sort them, so i’m just going to italicize the ones that are my very absolute favorite. But… watch all of these. Download them. Now. It’s almost summer time. You have nothing better to do. You’re blogging. Download the movies. Watch em. Get back to me. God bless.
General Horror Movies That Rule. Watch Them: The Blair Witch Project, Night of the Living Dead (both 1968 & 1990 versions), Dawn of the Dead (1978 and 2004 both rule), Day of the Dead (1985), Return of the Living Dead (the movie that started the whole brain eating zombies), Creepshow (1+2),
Paranormal Activity, Saw (1 & 2 are definitely a must; torture porn warning though), Hellraiser, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, Pan’s Labyrinth (more of a dark fantasy movie), Rec, The Ring, Fright Night,The Strangers, Let The Right One In, The Devil’s Rejects, American Psycho, Final Destination, Hostel (torture porn warning), 1408,30 Days of Night, The Hills Have Eyes (2006 version), 13 Ghosts (1960), Scream, Slither, The Descent, Cabin Fever,Dance of the Dead, Trick r Treat, Daybreakers, Martyrs, The Ruins, The Mist, Jacob’s Ladder, Session 9, The Shining (Kubrick for style & Remake for better novel adaptation), Grace, Cannibal Holocaust (not for the faint of heart though), The Sixth Sense, The Orphanage, Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola version), Interview with the Vampire, Tales from the Darkside, CandymanClassic/Cult Horror: Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Psycho, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Silence of the Lambs, The Shining, The Exorcist, Jaws, Alien, Evil Dead (1+2), Army of Darkness, The Thing, Misery (more of a thriller than horror), Carrie, Black Christmas (1974 version), Child’s Play, The Omen, Dead Alive, Cujo, Last House on the Left, Nosferatu, Vampyr, Martin, Dead Pit, Carnival of Souls, Dracula (with Bela Lugosi; 1931), Dracula (with Peter Cushing; 1958), The Wolf Man (with Lon Chaney Jr; 1941), Frankenstein (with Boris Karloff; 1931), Maniac, The Howling, The House on Haunted Hill (with Vincent Price; 1959), The Haunting (1963), Prom Night (1980), Zombi 2 (aka Zombie),
Inside, The Ruins, Lake Eden, The Collector, The OrphanageAre These Horror? Kind Of: Se7en, Zombieland, Drag Me To Hell, Blade (1 & 2), Gremlins, The Lost Boys,
Deep Blue Sea,Blue Velvet(not horror; it’s David Lynch movie, surreal flick),Legion,A Clockwork Orange(not horror; it’s sci-fi if anything),Requiem For A Dream(not horror; addiction drama), Oldboy, Ichii The Killer, Irreversible, Battle Royale, May, Shutter Island, The Human Centipede, Videodrome, Shivers, Rabid, The Naked Lunch, The Fly (deals with sci-fi; 1986 version), Ravenous, Twilight Zone movieHorrorfest:
Kill Theory, The Final, Dread, Borderland,Lake Mundo, Wicked Little Things, The Gravedancers (until near the end) and The Abandoned. Note: It’s hard to recommend HorrorFest titles. They’re either bad or just okay.Masters of Horror: Imprint, Cigarette Burns, Jenifer, Pro-Life, Sick Girl, Jenifer, Dance of the Dead
These Aren’t… Good? But I Like Them:
The Happening, Pumpkinhead, Cannibal Holocaust, Orphan, Darkness Falls, Hatchet, Urban Legends, 2001 Maniacs, House of 1000 Corpses, Pet Semetary 1 & 2, Daybreakers, Halloween 3: Season of the Witch (don’t expect Michael Myers; the original concept for Halloween was to be a horror movie series with a Halloween-theme like this one & the first)reblogging for reference purposes and also so jenny can provide additional commentary
I love the last category “these aren’t good, but I like them” is a huge chunk of my movies. Hatchet is totally good though.
- I think the list lacks actual classics. Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Carnival of Souls, Freaks. Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein. Nosferatu. I love the Black Christmas is on there already but stay away from the remake.
- As a Canadian, I’m throwing in Cube, Hypercube and Cube Zero as well as the entire Gingersnaps series, but at least the first one.
- Needs more Japan! Seriously, if you want fun summery horror movies, look towards Japan. Machine Girl, Tokyo Gore Police, Vampire Girl vs Frankenstein Girl, Versus and Robo-geisha at the very least. If you want older crazy Japanese movies, Hausu.
- If you want more realism Inside, Frontiers, and Them because the French make fucked up films.
